How to Fix Failed Resin Miniature Prints

Failed resin miniature prints can be frustrating — especially when you’re printing detailed 40mm fantasy models. Warped swords, missing arms, layer shifts, or prints stuck to the FEP instead of the build plate are common issues in resin 3D printing.

The good news? Most resin miniature failures have clear causes and simple fixes. This guide will help you diagnose the problem and get your 3D printed miniatures back to sharp, tabletop-ready quality.

Problem 1: Print Stuck to the FEP Film

If your miniature fails early and sticks to the resin vat instead of the build plate, the bottom layers likely didn’t adhere properly.

How to Fix It

  • Increase bottom exposure time slightly
  • Check and re-level the build plate
  • Ensure the build plate is clean and properly tightened
  • Increase bottom layer count to 5–6 layers

Problem 2: Missing Parts or Floating Pieces

Missing weapons, hands, or armor pieces usually mean unsupported “islands” in your STL file.

How to Fix It

  • Use island detection in your slicer
  • Add additional supports to thin elements
  • Angle the miniature 30–45 degrees
  • Consider using pre-supported STL files

Problem 3: Layer Lines or Soft Details

If your miniature prints but lacks crisp facial features or surface texture, exposure or layer height may be incorrect.

How to Fix It

  • Reduce layer height to 0.03–0.04mm
  • Adjust exposure in small increments
  • Ensure resin temperature is stable (20–25°C)

Problem 4: Warped or Bent Miniatures

Warping can occur due to weak supports, excessive suction forces, or improper curing.

How to Fix It

  • Increase support density or tip diameter
  • Angle the model to reduce suction
  • Avoid over-curing thin elements

Problem 5: Brittle or Fragile Parts

If swords, claws, or thin details snap easily, overexposure or over-curing is often the cause.

How to Fix It

  • Reduce normal exposure slightly
  • Shorten UV curing time
  • Consider ABS-like or tough resin

Quick Resin Troubleshooting Checklist

  • Re-level build plate regularly
  • Filter resin after failed prints
  • Inspect FEP film for damage or clouding
  • Calibrate exposure before printing detailed miniatures
  • Regenerate supports if scaling models

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do my resin miniatures keep failing?

Common causes include incorrect exposure settings, weak supports, improper orientation, or poor bed leveling.

How do I know if my exposure is wrong?

Soft details suggest overexposure, while weak or detached layers suggest underexposure.

Can temperature affect resin prints?

Yes. Resin performs best between 20–25°C. Cold environments can cause poor layer adhesion and failed prints.

My name is Dennis Xawery Moore and since 2018 I have been professionally creating 3D models, mainly designing them for 3D printers. I was born in the 80’s and raised in the 90’s. I love both the comic style of artists such as Joe Madureira, Jim Lee and Todd Mcfarlane, and the fantasy style created by Simon Bisley, Greg Staples, Alex Horley and Frank Frazetta. But I also love the Western Chibi style that Derek Laufman represents and he is the main inspiration to create this project with a little mix of the artists mentioned above.
